A History Lesson of schuh

  There was a time when fashion dictated a unique look, and people purchased and wore what they were told. Then came the change in the market and people wanted a bit of diversity. And in the early '80s, a small independent shop names schuh appeared and started selling shoes. It was created as a family business and had the same atmosphere of organised chaos today. However, at that time, it was not a shoe shop. It was more of a fashion store that was selling shoes. Edinburgh's shoe shop was supposed to be called Lizard Shoes. However, Sandy changed her mind at the last minute because she noticed a German footwear magazine called Schuhe. And this is how schuh was born. To say frankly, this is the name that is hard to pronounce by most people, and a lot of schuh customers assumed that schuh is a German brand. It was quite interesting, that despite having a German name schuh was mostly known in the UK and Ireland. This only changed in 2015, when they opened their first store abroad. Can you guess which country their first choice was? Yes, you are right. It was in Germany.

Glasgow and then Newcastle soon followed the next shop in Edinburgh, and the schuh story was starting to unwind. Into the '90s the fashion changed from looks to brands. schuh was ready to accommodate, and brands like Converse, CAT, Kickers, Vans and Dr Martens were entered and prominently emphasised in all shops. Initially, there was some resistance from sports brands who didn't want to see their products alongside stilettos and thigh-high boots. This marked an interesting new adventure for schuh, so started an accelerated period of store openings, and in just 5 years there are now twice as many shoe stores as before. In 2012 schuh opened their first kids-only store in three shopping centres: Lakeside, Braehead and Liverpool.  While all stores claim to put the customer first, schuh was really there for customer with some crazy initiatives like 365-day customer returns and making the whole product inventory available to every customer in any location.
